Okay, so if it didn’t kill me…

Posted in Run, Jog at 6:35 pm by renaemd · Digg! this story! Digg! this story.

…does that mean that it made me stronger?

Learning from the mistake of my last workout, I started earlier, and told myself that it was to be an easy pace and that is okay. I don’t know when in my life going a little over 2.5 miles became just an easy little workout, but it has, which is crazy and wonderful all at the same time…

It still hurt, and it sucked, which worried me enough that I just walked after finishing two of the running intervals. (BTW - LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the podrunner intervals workout - go download it now!)

My concern is this isn’t that “it hurts so good” hurt - I like that kind of hurt, where you are sore from building muscle. This is different - like, huh, I wonder if I keep going if my leg muscle is going to detatch itself from my body and beat me with itself, because right now, it is hard to walk and it seems very angry.

All I know is, it better get in gear - I have 13.1 miles to kick butt on coming up.

Hey this feels good, oh, wait, no, that’s pain…

Posted in Walk, Run, Jog at 11:07 am by renaemd · Digg! this story! Digg! this story.

I was all pumped up after doing 13 total miles last week and beating my PR. I set out to do (wait for it) 10 miles so I could start tapering off for my race in three weeks. So I got ready and set out, but started out 30+ min later than I wanted, knowing that it was going to be a really long workout.

Mile one - still a little sore, but surviving
Mile two - man, it really hurts when I’m on the running section of the interval, but last time, it stopped hurting at the end of mile two
Mile three - hmmmm, it’s not stopping, in fact, it feels like my leg is going to stop working soon
Mile four - now I am nervous. I’m running with a marked limp and it is getting pretty dark out here. If someone tries to carry me off, I’m not going to be able to get away or kick because my leg is close to non-functioning.
Mile four point five - My husband was driving around the neighboorhood to check on me because it was dark and I didn’t have any water with me.

I got in the car and left.

Much ice and many anti-inflammatories later - it is better. Still sore. Every once in a while, feels like someone is hitting me in the calf with a hammer, but I’m not dying…

I’m going out again tomorrow.

Nightime is the rightime

Posted in Run at 6:30 pm by renaemd · Digg! this story! Digg! this story.

Tonight, I ran faster and farther than I did during my 10K race just 5 days before!

I think one of the major reasons was the heat - it was not nearly as hot has it was at the race at 6 pm in mid-town Los Angeles. Yay for living near the coast.

I was hurting really bad when I started the running part of my intervals - I was worried I had injured something during the race earlier in the week as it was the longest time/distance I had spent on the pavement/asphalt since I started this hole thing. But I thought to myself “it is supposed to hurt, or else everyone would do it all the time” and I pushed through the pain for the first two miles. Then it started to clear up a little and while it still hurt, I knew it was going to be okay. More than okay, in fact! I ended up finishing at one of my best times ever and it was a great feeling!

My first 10k!

Posted in Run at 6:00 pm by renaemd · Digg! this story! Digg! this story.

I’m so excited that I finished my first 10k this weekend! My friends and I raised over $4,500 to fight cancers below the waist and participated in Uncover the Cure’s Underwear Affair in Los Angeles.

This is a picture of me after the race and the whole event (I’m on the left)Me and Malia (I’m on the left) at the end of the Underwear Affair

I am very proud of our little team of 5 people! Go “Save the VJJs!”

What the race was like for me: First things first, it was REALLY hot, and we were there in the sun before it started, which was not fun as it sucked the energy right out of us. But Malia and I started out with a nice pattern of run/walk/run/walk and made it through. She is a real runner, but was very patient with me for my first go.  My back was okay until mile 4.5 and then something went ‘pop’ and it really, really hurt, so I didn’t do much running/jogging after that. But I took the drugs that the doctor gave me and I’m feeling a-ok today. I also didn’t get enough food directly after and I ended up getting really loopy, which worked out okay as we were heading to a party.

I’m feeling much better about the upcoming 1/2 marathon that I’m doing at the end of this month. If I keep up the pace that I had for this race, I’ll finish under the allotted time (participants must maintain a 16 min/mile). This race helped me to know that I can do it.

Nike+ note –> it was off by .5 miles - will need to re-calibrate on a longer stretch of asphalt.

…But I ended up outside

Posted in Run at 7:02 pm by renaemd · Digg! this story! Digg! this story.

I’m stumbling through a 10k on Saturday, so I thought I should get off of my treadmill and head outside. It was really nice outside and since the race will be in the evening, I thought I’d better find out what it would be like out there in the concrete jungle. I only stopped once (to pet a cat), but I had a pretty good pace out there. I need to find a place out there where there aren’t neat houses and flowers and cats - I’m getting distracted and then I slow down. Booooo to the slowing down!

But I think I’ll be ready for Saturday - Go Team “Save the VJJs!” (http://la08.uncoverthecure.com/goto/renaemd/span>)

Nike+ made a friend out of me

Posted in Walk, Run, Jog at 7:01 pm by renaemd · Digg! this story! Digg! this story.

I got my Nike+ Sport Pack this weekend (10th Wedding Anniversary present - my, how times have changed!) and I had my first real workout with it tonight. It probably isn’t as accurate as it “could” be, because I don’t have the Nike+ shoes (sidebar: Dear Nike, Stability shoes are not the same as Motion Control shoes. I really like the effort you put into making so many neat and cool shoes, but even as I tried on your lovely Equalons, you and I both knew that it wasn’t going to happen for this big girl with the severe over-pronation issue. I’m looking forward to trying out your Motion Control shoes when they are supposed to come out. I know I’m not supposed to really know about that, as you were trying to convince me that your Stability shoe is, in fact, Motion Control, but I called my serious shoe peeps and they let me know that it was not the case, but that you were rectifying the situation. Untill then, dearest holder of the swoosh, I will be stuffing your Nike+ sensor into my shoelaces and hoping for the best. Love, Me) but it was great to hear the mile marks through my iPod, and to be able to get a status every time I hit my center button.

I just have to do what I did tonight about 4.4 times in a row for the upcoming 1/2 marathon - ai, yi, yi!

8 mile - more than just a movie

Posted in Walk, Run, Jog at 3:56 pm by renaemd · Digg! this story! Digg! this story.

Well, the blisters on my feet and the little aches I’m feeling prove that today was a lot of work. I completed my 8 mile stumble today…which is a little less than 2/3 of the 1/2 marathon I’ll be stumbling in 6 weeks, but almost 2 miles more than the 10K that is in 2 weeks.

My pace is still slow - I haven’t recovered completely from my back injury and even though my husband tried to work out some of the bad tension in my back, I can tell tonight will be a Tylenol with Codeine night as a migrane is blossoming across my head from the back.

But on a more positive note, I finished 8 miles, and as my husband pointed out, when is the last time I went 8 miles on foot with a time limit.

I already got the “OK” from said husband to carve 3 hours out of our 10th anniversary weekend (next weekend) to go for 10 miles, so I’ll be doing my workouts and such accordingly this weekend. Now, after burning all of those calories, I go to work on developing some cupcake recipes…

Beer at lunch + having a cold = less than ideal workout

Posted in Walk, Run, Jog at 6:24 pm by renaemd · Digg! this story! Digg! this story.

If you have ever gone to the Library Alehouse in Santa Monica and had the Oatmeal Stout, you would understand why I could not possibly go there and not partake. It was really good. What was not so good is having a cold at the same time and then trying to workout after the workday.

Not my finest performance. But as it was my last beer in a long, long while, it was worth it. :)

 Probably not very motivational :)

Walking to Lunch, again
