Today showed me that I can’t miss a workout. I need to be more consistent. My pace got better (yay!) but my endurance remains crapulent.
But I did get tighter pants (note: I will not be leaving the house in these for a long time…), so that helped a LOT!
I will push harder on Tuesday - I need to get to that three mile mark.

If anyone wants to participate in this and would like the support of a team, I have formed a team (#557 - Save the VJJs) and would welcome anyone who is interested in mixing their love of walking/running (it’s just a 5K) with an important cause - fight women’s cancers. I am a cancer survivor and it is a great event that raises money and awareness - please feel free to send me a message if you have any questions and I have included the website to join the team below.

So my workout was a little disappointing - I was going along at a nice jog, getting a personal best (15 min/mile) going when two things happened: (1) I started to get that little pinched nerve feeling in my right hip, and (2) my backside started to hurt (the faster I went, the more it hurt). So I stopped at the one mile mark and walked the rest, because I wanted to finish my two miles. I know that people who start this who had previously only worked out by sitting on the couch have adjustment periods, so I’m just chalking it up to my body talking back a little, as it were.
The thing that was really weird to me was realizing that wearing different pants makes a difference. I’m not a “small girl,” but I didn’t realize that if I’m going to run/jog, I need to wear my tighter pants to keep my “extra” from bouncing around - it really hurts! Of course, it is my goal that this becomes less and less of a problem, but these are all good things to figure out now.

It was my intent to go the full 2 miles, but I realized 1.5 miles in that I hadn’t changed my socks and my feet were burning on the instep. I stopped and checked and found that I had developed dime-sized blisters, so went and got a “good” pair of running socks, but the damage had been done. So I finished another 1/4 of a mile and called it a work out. It’s a terrible lesson, but better now than later, no?

I missed yesterday’s training session because I went straight from work to my husband’s “Yay, I got a new job dinner” and then saw a movie directly after, so today’s workout is a day late, but felt good (on this end). I was able to run at 5.0 mph for 5:30 of my time, so I’m slowly building up. My mom advised me not to be to drastic in switching between speeds because I might injure myself, so I left the 6.0 go for now. I’m still loving my shoes - jury is out on the bra. I may have to get one for different times of the month (if you know what I mean). Peace out!

Whew! Okay, 6.0 mph is the fastest I’ve run in about 20 years!
I wanted to go for three miles tonight, but will pace myself as I have 24 more weeks to get in shape for this half-marathon and I’d hate to get tired and hurt myself just to get another mile in. I think the 5 hours of walking around Disneyland and California Adventure (until 12:30 am) might be why I feel so tired today. Perhaps I should watch doing that before my long run days in the future…
Oh, and I love my new shoes!!!!!! Yay about the no-hurting feet!

No one told me the 2nd day was harder, but it has been interesting to find out what all these new muscle groups are - I’ve never felt them before

So my friend Malia (shout out to Malia Jones everyone) told me about the place she goes for shoes and socks, Top to Top (3 locations in Metro Los Angeles). I was just planning on getting socks and a new “foundational garment” and the manager stopped me pretty quick to explain to me what was wrong with the shoes that I had on. Turns out I am an over-pronator, which TOTALLY explains the knee problems I have been having, so I got me some new motion contol shoes. What I loved is that she could watch me walk and knew what kind of shoe I needed, but had me try on and discribe several pairs so that we could find the best one. Awe-some.
They tell me a good shoe is 50% of the race, so I’m jammin’ now, baby!

Well, I did it - I started! I got up to a max of 5.0 mph this time, and would have gone further, but it was the fastest I have gone in a long time, so thought I should work up to it.
Pretty sure I am going to be a little sore tomorrow…

I’m asking this question more for my friends and family than for me. I know why I am doing this, but I thought maybe there might be those who have known me for a while that are saying “I am a little concerned - this is so unlike you. What brought this on?”
Here is the thing…I am heavier than I want to be, and even though the dreaded Thyroid condition is back (yup, my body keeps trying to keep this weight on), the fight with cancer this year really started me on this journey to take better care of myself. So not only have Casey and I been on NutriSystem since Oct 1 (and lost a combined total of 55 pounds), but we purchased a treadmill with our Christmas money and have committed to being more physical. This, along with taking better care of ourselves spiritually and relationally has been a big focus for us.
So that answers the “why are you more active” question. But it doesn’t answer the “why a half-marathon” query. To answer that, I must admit, I love working out, but I HATE running. Fast walking, great. Recumbent bike, great. Swimming, great. Running, booooooooo! But to really get a good workout from the treadmill, you need to move your little butt, so I needed a real goal. Nothing is quite as real as plunking down a non-refundable registration fee of $100.
Now I have a training buddy (Hey, Joy) and a schedule. I have 5+ months and enthusiasm. Please keep cheering me on!!!!
