Biggest Loser Workout 2 DVD

Posted in General Cardio at 7:00 pm by renaemd · Digg! this story! Digg! this story.

It was 45 min of Bob and Kim kicking my booty - I was even sweating during the warm-up and cool-down (aren’t those supposed to be easier?). My trouble spot is the lunges - I’m going to have to work on doing those so I don’t hurt myself, but I know they will pay off in the end (or on my end, ha, ha, ha). It is my plan to have this be my cross-training 2x a week. I really like it because it is customizable, which I have learned will help keep my body from getting used to the workout and I will burn more calories and tone more (yahoo!)

Funny note - the part where I was working on my abs hurt so much that I was making weird noises and my husband yelled downstairs “Are you okay?!? Have you hurt yourself?!?”

Why I am happy my friends got me the Runners World mag

Posted in Run at 5:25 pm by renaemd · Digg! this story! Digg! this story.

Thanks to Catherine and Malia (my Westside running/happy hour/co-worker friends), I received my first issue of my gift subscription to Runners World, and it has already improved my training. “How,” you ask?

First of all, it gave me a handy-dandy “here is what your run:walk ratio should be” based on your mile/min - I want to be consistent at 15 mph (and work down to 13-14 mph by August) so my ratio should be :30 run/:45 walk, which I tried tonight on my treadmill (walking at 3.5 and running at 5.3) and lookie! My avg pace is 14:38/mile! I’m going to add another mile on my next run and see if I can keep that pace up.

Second, it gave me much inspiration.

Third, it helped me to realize that I am not getting enough calories on my workout days. I’m on Nutrisystem and 1,200/day is great for losing weight (I lost 25 pounds in 3 months), but not if you are training for a 1/2 marathon. So we need to re-evaluate that plan.

Anyway, thanks Catherine and Malia - someday I’ll be cool like you guys and run long and fast, too!

Run - 0.7 hours - 4/24/08

Okay! I was able to maintain a 3.5 mph walk for most of this workout and even got some jogging and running in without hurting my knees too much. I’ve been very concerned because I had hurt them so bad last week, but the fact that my walking pace is up 0.2 mph makes me feel like the other workouts I’ve been doing are helping and making me stronger. I’ve really got to push this weekend and finish my long run, even if I have to walk a large part of it. Of course, this is in between catering an Open House for a friend and driving down to Irvine for church.

Minor rant: I am HATING my 8-5 M-F schedule - booooooooo! If I could ever work out in this house when I was alone, I wouldn’t feel so rushed and allow myself to cut corners because I feel bad that my hubby is kicked out of the main part of the apt (we have a small place) while I am getting my sweat on. Okay, rant over - we will work it out…

Sunday Morning Job/Walk/Hobble

Posted in Run, Walk at 12:00 pm by renaemd · Digg! this story! Digg! this story.

The fact that I have been working at churches on Sunday morning for the last 8 years seems to have helped me to forget that Sunday mornings are not the same as other mornings. The fact that at 10 am there were 552 spaces remaining in the parking garage in downtown Santa Monica should have clued me in, but I was determined to remain unaware. My plan was to go to REI and get a water belt and then go run by the beach while it was early and cool. The whole “stores not opening until 11 am” thing threw a little wrench in my plans, but after 20 min of “hmmmm…how can I work this out” I decided not to go home, but to walk the blocks around the REI and then get my belt. Part of the issue is that I have no place to put my ID and keys when I run, and carrying a purse just wouldn’t work out very well, so I needed to get SOMETHING to put my stuff in. I know, some of you say, but there has got to be room in your bra for such things - dear friends, I can assure you, there isn’t even really room for me in my bra, so there ain’t nothing else even comin’ close.

So I did get the water belt and some Clif Bloks (Margarita and Cola - not together, two separate flavors) and finished my workout on the pedestrian lane by the beach. I tried to jog, but it really hurt my knees, and not in that “I’m building muscle” way - more in that “if I keep this up, I’m not going to be able to walk for a few days” way.  I ended up walking very briskly instead. Obviously, my un-wise hill workout had longer effects on me than anticipated. But I’m not going to let it stop me…

The after-effects of pushing too hard

I was hoping to get my 3 miles in for this workout, but it ended up being close to two instead - I really, really hurt my knees on the last hills workout. So, okay, lesson learned. Still glad I can move and that I could get in as much as I did.

Okay, so babysteps might be better

Did another hills workout - was kind of an idiot and instead of being *smart* and just increasing the speed of the Level 1 workout, I thought, oh, I’ll just do a higher level and that will equate. No. That was silly. While it was good going for the first 15 min, when it bumped up to a 4.0 mile @ an 8% incline, I was stupid enough to try it. I hurt my knee (I hear icepacks in my future).

So what did I learn? Lower level, higher speeds. Build up to it. You literally need to walk before you run.

Tomorrow, I run 3 miles again. On a flat treadmill. Nothin’ fancy, just training my muscles.

(Shout out to my new sweat365 friend, Brad!)

The hills are alive, with the sound of panting…

Posted in Walk at 7:00 pm by renaemd · Digg! this story! Digg! this story.

So I opted for a pre-programmed hills workout on my treadmill tonight instead of a run because my knees have been so incredibly tender the last two days (I’ve had to ice them every night and had to stop taking anti-inflammatories due to the ulcer) and while it was an honest workout and I am feeling some different muscle groups than when I just do my regular walk/run bit, I don’t know how I got to the point where a 7.0% incline at 3.5mph is “easy.” Admittedly, it didn’t feel easy when I was doing it, but when I was done, I was pretty pleased with the fact that I got a nice sweat, good heartrate and I can tell it really worked my stomach without hurting my knees. I’ll keep working toward the more challenging hills workouts on my machine (Joy is trying to get me out in real Nature to do hills - I’m sure I’ll cave soon…no pun intended) on my “off days.”

Walk - 0.8 hours - 4/12/08

It was a good workout, just not long enough. This was one of the first times that my body got tired before my lungs. Could be because I have been under the weather all week and I’m not quite over it, or that my knees have been aching, but at least I was able to get more than 1/2 way to my goal of 5 miles for the day. I’m starting to think that the treadmill is best for runs 3 miles and under and that I need to quickly find some outdoor places to run (away from the cars) in West Los Angeles for days that I’m going farther than that.

My nemesis - the incline

Posted in Run at 6:45 pm by renaemd · Digg! this story! Digg! this story.

My friend Shervin (shout out to the OC) told me that the treadmill equivalent of walking outside against the breeze is a 3.0% incline. He may be right, but I was HATING the addition of the incline for this workout - it pretty much pissed my knees off. Sure, I got more calories burnt, but it also just killed me for the week. I’m going to have to figure this part out - maybe if I was walking the inclines more and worked up to the run?

Running outside does not equal running on treadmill

Posted in Run at 9:30 am by renaemd · Digg! this story! Digg! this story.

So I had the best (and longest) run yet on Sunday Morning. Things I learned:

  • Treadmills don’t prepare you for wind
  • Running outside is less boring (look at all the doggies!)
  • Treadmills are done when you are done - when running a trail, you always have to get back to your car
  • When someone behind you yells “Left!” it does NOT mean that you go left.
  • Running with a friend makes it go quicker
  • Must…get….water…belt…

Kudos to Joy for slowing her pace to run/walk 4.5 miles with me - it was a good first step to break me out of my treadmill shell.
