When they say “challenging course,” it probably means hills.

I signed up to run for the Project Cuddle 5K last weekend (www.projectcuddle.com) to support my friend Catherine (who raised over $600) and to get another outdoor race in. As usual, I learned some things:

1) If I don’t have a course map, I can’t visualize it, which means I spend time wondering where I’m going, instead of just concentrating on getting there. I need to do one thing at a time when running…
2) If they say challenging course, they’s gonna be hills. Perhaps the 150 feet incline and decline at a 45 degree angle should be mentioned at the same time. It’s just me, but I find packed dirt with gravel daunting at that angle.
3) When there are only 246 people running the race and 75 of them are Sheriff Cadets running in formation, it is going to throw the rankings off. IMHO, they should have been counted as 1 unit and then my 201 out of 246 placement (last 1/5) would have been more like 127 (middle 1/5) out of 171.
4) Eating right after a race keeps you from passing out. :)

This run was a milestone for me - I had a moment in the last mile (when I was running by myself through the weeds) where I truly enjoyed the running. I remembered what it was like to run full tilt down a hill with no fear. Looking forward to more of that…

Good run, will keep working time down

It was nice and cool this morning (so much better than last week), so I had a good run on the treadmill mid-morning (it was raining so had to stay inside, but I hope to start running 1/2 of my weekend runs outside to get ready for the outdoor conditions of the 1/2 marathon). My big accomplishment today was running 4 minutes in a row at 5.0 mph. I’ve been doing a pretty consistent “run a minute, walk a minute” routine, so this was a big thing to push to that. I did some 2 and 3 minute (at 5.0 mph) in a row, too, but when I started to get a bad blister on my right foot, I calmed it down a little.

My Runner’s World training schedule has me on 17 min miles for my easy (2 mi) runs, but that seems SO slow…so I’m pushing harder and hoping to build up my muscle and make me stronger.

I’ll be quitting my Curves membership to save $$ (I love Curves, but mine is 35 miles away and that’s $24/week in gas, plus monthly membership), but I can renew an old Bally’s membership for $9/month (and it is 3 miles from my house), so I plan to do that and go to the yoga class (for more flexibility and strength) and use some of the resistance training machines (to build more muscle). I’ve also read that after a really long run in the morning, doing some time on the eliptical later in the day helps with moving the toxins out of the muscule, and they have some of those, too.

Too darn hot!

Whew! Saturday was WAY too hot and even though my training schedule “said” 2 miles, I was hoping to do more, the record heat meant that 2 miles had to be enough. We just don’t have air conditioning…

Looks like this weekend will be much cooler, so I should be able to go a little farther on all of my runs this week. Yay!

My first 5K!

Posted in Run at 7:00 am by renaemd · Digg! this story! Digg! this story.

I completed my first 5K on Saturday when my team (Go TEAM!) participated in the Los Angeles version of the REVLON Run/Walk for Women. I didn’t get enough training in the week before because all of my time was taken up with getting details (fundraising, t-shirts, carpools, directions) together, so my run suffered from it, but I was pleased to see that I had a great pace (for me) for the race and I was so touched that all of my faster-runner friends slowed down to finish with me. As a 9-month cancer survivor, this event was important to me and having the support was immeasurable.

I can’t type any more about it, or I’ll start crying.

6 miles!!!!

I did it! 6 miles today. I slowed my pace down to add miles/increase endurance and I did it! And that is all the energy I have left to type :)

Run - 0.5 hours - 5/01/2008

It is my second night of trying the run/walk ratio and I have modified it a little (walking :15 more) and it worked well for 30 min. Okay, so I could do a mile in less than 15 min. Now I just need to do that for 13.1 miles…it seems daunting. Especially because I’m having such a hard time getting to the 3 mile mark. I wonder if I should break my workout up - 1 mile in morning and 2 miles at night (that was a suggestion I just read in a mag). Does that count as 3 miles of endurance? All I know is, I need to get it in gear!
