…does that mean that it made me stronger?
Learning from the mistake of my last workout, I started earlier, and told myself that it was to be an easy pace and that is okay. I don’t know when in my life going a little over 2.5 miles became just an easy little workout, but it has, which is crazy and wonderful all at the same time…
It still hurt, and it sucked, which worried me enough that I just walked after finishing two of the running intervals. (BTW - LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the podrunner intervals workout - go download it now!)
My concern is this isn’t that “it hurts so good” hurt - I like that kind of hurt, where you are sore from building muscle. This is different - like, huh, I wonder if I keep going if my leg muscle is going to detatch itself from my body and beat me with itself, because right now, it is hard to walk and it seems very angry.
All I know is, it better get in gear - I have 13.1 miles to kick butt on coming up.

I was all pumped up after doing 13 total miles last week and beating my PR. I set out to do (wait for it) 10 miles so I could start tapering off for my race in three weeks. So I got ready and set out, but started out 30+ min later than I wanted, knowing that it was going to be a really long workout.
Mile one - still a little sore, but surviving
Mile two - man, it really hurts when I’m on the running section of the interval, but last time, it stopped hurting at the end of mile two
Mile three - hmmmm, it’s not stopping, in fact, it feels like my leg is going to stop working soon
Mile four - now I am nervous. I’m running with a marked limp and it is getting pretty dark out here. If someone tries to carry me off, I’m not going to be able to get away or kick because my leg is close to non-functioning.
Mile four point five - My husband was driving around the neighboorhood to check on me because it was dark and I didn’t have any water with me.
I got in the car and left.
Much ice and many anti-inflammatories later - it is better. Still sore. Every once in a while, feels like someone is hitting me in the calf with a hammer, but I’m not dying…
I’m going out again tomorrow.

Tonight, I ran faster and farther than I did during my 10K race just 5 days before!
I think one of the major reasons was the heat - it was not nearly as hot has it was at the race at 6 pm in mid-town Los Angeles. Yay for living near the coast.
I was hurting really bad when I started the running part of my intervals - I was worried I had injured something during the race earlier in the week as it was the longest time/distance I had spent on the pavement/asphalt since I started this hole thing. But I thought to myself “it is supposed to hurt, or else everyone would do it all the time” and I pushed through the pain for the first two miles. Then it started to clear up a little and while it still hurt, I knew it was going to be okay. More than okay, in fact! I ended up finishing at one of my best times ever and it was a great feeling!

I’m so excited that I finished my first 10k this weekend! My friends and I raised over $4,500 to fight cancers below the waist and participated in Uncover the Cure’s Underwear Affair in Los Angeles.
This is a picture of me after the race and the whole event (I’m on the left)
I am very proud of our little team of 5 people! Go “Save the VJJs!”
What the race was like for me: First things first, it was REALLY hot, and we were there in the sun before it started, which was not fun as it sucked the energy right out of us. But Malia and I started out with a nice pattern of run/walk/run/walk and made it through. She is a real runner, but was very patient with me for my first go. My back was okay until mile 4.5 and then something went ‘pop’ and it really, really hurt, so I didn’t do much running/jogging after that. But I took the drugs that the doctor gave me and I’m feeling a-ok today. I also didn’t get enough food directly after and I ended up getting really loopy, which worked out okay as we were heading to a party.
I’m feeling much better about the upcoming 1/2 marathon that I’m doing at the end of this month. If I keep up the pace that I had for this race, I’ll finish under the allotted time (participants must maintain a 16 min/mile). This race helped me to know that I can do it.
Nike+ note –> it was off by .5 miles - will need to re-calibrate on a longer stretch of asphalt.
